The plot and pacing are a mess from the beginning of the film we are thrown into a disaster in truly Hideaki Anno fashion, but with no time to explain whatever the hell is going on in a simple yet concise manner. In the original film, Godzilla had a reason/motivation to completely reduce Tokyo to just nothing.īut this one? He just does what he does with no apparent reason. But why? Why did he come ashore? Why did he evolve? Why does he destroy? Here he just comes ashore twice, "evolves", breaks havoc, hibernates. Here he just walks, doesn't do anything until his atomic breath scene (One of the only truly good scenes in the movie.) and most importantly, he doesn't have a motivation. This weak characterization applies to even Godzilla. With Rando Yaguchi we don't know anything about him, we don't know why he is so devoted to politics, we don't know if he has family or a romantic partner in the first place! We basically don't know anything about them! HOW ARE GOING TO FEEL AND ROOT TO THEM?!Īt least in the original film we h fleshed out characters with motivations and made decisions that made sense with their persoanlity and character (Serizawa, Dr. The characterization is REALLY weak: To start off, the actors are not bad, but by GOD the characters they portray suffer from a REALLY weak characterization, from the "main" character to literally everyone (this includes the 1st Prime Minister and Kayoco Ann Patterson). While i used to love this film some years ago, now i just don't like it.
